Any ideas how to settle my 16 month old daughter when going to bed?

my daughter has always been great at going to bed no problems, as long as she has her dummy but the last couple of weeks she has been screaming on the way up to her bed and when i put her in her cot she cries hysterically i hate to leave her cryin so hard i dont mind if its just a little sob but not hysterically? please any answers would be great.
