If you must drive, i'd avoid I-5 due to the gvine which is a major hill. Consider using highway 101 along the coastal area. keep in mind that there are still substantial hills but less than the alternatives. A better option for you might be to take Amtrak which has several rail lines linking LA to SF. The most affordable and frequent is the San Joaquin line which starts out of LA union station via a Thruway bus connection to Bakersfield then via train to the Bay Area. Cost can be as low as $38 one way. Good Luck!
