Is an early '08 XBOX 360 safe from the bugs that plagued the early systems?

I'm wondering if/when Microsoft started producing units free from the bugs that caused the infamous red ring of death crash? I know that they started including an HDMI port around summer '07 but does this coincide with an improved system overhaul?
